Tiananmen Square, under the ever watchful star of Chairman Mao with the assistance of the young soldier, standing stiff as a ramrod. The Square, site of the student uprising in 1989 put down ruthlessly by the Communist government with the use of troops and tanks, is today quiet and peaceful and a main attraction for both Chinese and foreign visitors.
